Began this log today (02 Feb 2011) although I installed
this VM several days ago.
Therefore, beginning this log with these back-entry
details about the installation, which may admittedly be sketchy.
(I'll fill in details little by little as I remember or
re-discover things that I've done so far):
Hostname: drizzle
Static IP address will be: 192.168.0.21 (Mask 255.255.255.0)
Added this to frazzle:/etc/hosts (frazzle is the VM host mochine).
Downloading from http://www.debian.org/releases/lenny/debian-installer/
File: debian-507-i386-netinst.iso
MD5 checksum: 46b6 c1fa .... 6714 d7a3 Okay
VM files location: /home/jay/vmware/drizzle
Virtual memory: 724 MB
Network connection: Bridged
I/O controller: SCSI LSI Logic (as recommended)
Virtual hard disk: 10 GB, split into multiple pieces
Virtual file name: drizzle.vmdk (et seq.)
Beginning Debian 5 installer in the VM.
First regular user account: jay / Password: xdr5******
root password: The same: xdr5******
Chose to set up disk as all one partition
Setting static IP address to 192.168.0.21 in /etc/network/interfaces
Reboot. Successful pings in and out.
Shutdown.
2011-02-06
Debian 5 Linux VM (drizzle) started.
Taking some screen shots, as assigned.
Note, btw, that I can't use Ctrl-Alt-2 to go to a
plain-text mode, much as I might prefer to work that way,
because the host machine intercepts that and I get a
plain-text screen there instead.
Uh-oh. Got a networking problem. Firefox can connect
out to local site (http://frazzle) on the LAN only, but NOT
to external sites. Confirmed with ping. Need to
look into this. Illustrated in Fig. 3-6, submitted
today as part of homework (snapshots of the VM's).
Contrast with Fedora VM (fizzle) which works just fine.
First guess (which I haven't checked out yet): Haven't
specified (or not correctly) where to find gateway and/or
DNS server.
Shutdown.
2011-02-09 22:57
Debian 5 Linux VM (drizzle) started.
Problem noted earlier: Cannot connect outside the
local area network. Problem found: Net mask specified
wrong in /etc/network/interfaces as 225.225.225.0 (Oops.
What's wrong with this picture?) Fixed.
Rebooted.
Can ping out now and connect to external web sites.
23:17 Added eyes to jay's desktop upper and lower
panels. These things are important! Observation:
with vmware tools installed, the host system eyes
continue to track the mouse too, even when it's is the VM.
That wasn't so without vmware tools.
